PROFILE: MPUMALANGA MEC FOR CO-OPERATIVE GOVERNANCE AND TRADITIONAL AFFAIRS – MR MADALA MASUKU (MPL)

 

MEC Madala Masuku is the political head of Mpumalanga Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) which is responsible for supporting municipalities and the traditional leadership. Mr. Masuku leads the Department and monitors the implementation of the Mpumalanga Executive Council decisions and resolutions.

 

Mr. Masuku was born on 6 May 1965 at Calcutta, Bushbuckridge. He matriculated in 1985 at Chayaza Senior Secondary School and holds a post-graduate Diploma and Masters in Public and Development Management from Wits as well as a number of certificates in Public and Development Management. He started his career as a teacher of Mathematics, Science, English and Biology, before being appointed the project manager and coordinator for the Youth Education Trust.

 

Like most youth of his generation he never enjoyed his tender age. Growing from poverty stricken village faced by high level of unemployment and illiteracy, he could not resist but joined the struggle. He cut his political teeth from Youth Organisation such as Trasco, Cosas, Sansco and Sayco. He served in these organizations in several leadership capacities. He served in the Regional Executives of the African National Congress and ANC Youth League in various levels. He is currently the Member of the Central Committee of the SACP and simultaneously serves in the Provincial Executive Committee of the ANC.

 

He served from 1994 in Government first as Media Liaison and then as Director of Communication in the Premier’s Office under Premier Matthews Phosa.  He was appointed as Personal Assistant to the then MEC for Agriculture, Conservation and Environment, Mrs. Candith Mashego-Dlamini, before being appointed Director for Strategic Management Service in the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment.

 

 

In 2004, Mr. Masuku was elected as the Member of the Provincial Legislature, where he was subsequently appointed as Member of Executive Council for the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation. He was later appointed to be the MEC for Agriculture and Land Administration and was again appointed MEC for Public Works.  He is currently serving in this position as MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs. He is the eighth MEC to lead the department. His predecessors are: Mr Norman Mokoena, Ms Candith Mashego-Dlamini, Mr Jabu Mahlangu, Mr Mohamed Bhaba, Mr Pitso Tolo, Mr January Masilela and Mr Fish Mahlalela.
