BACKGROUND: Continued

Through intervention programmes such as the Water for all Project, the department is making progress in the provision of water services to communities. By December 2008, 24 water projects have been completed, and 74 projects, funded by the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) are under construction. These projects have created access to clean water for a total of 667 495 households out of 926 050. The backlog still to be addressed is 258 555. Through the Water for all project, the department hopes to accelerate the roll out of water infrastructure to meet a higher level of services by 2010.

There is currently a backlog of 242 059 households that do not have access to electrification. The department is working with the Department of Energy and municipalities to deal with the backlogs.
